There are 3 cutting or silvicultural methods common to forestry – Selection, Shelterwood and Clear cutting. What cutting method applies to a forest will depend on many factors including the tree species, ages of the trees, soils and the objectives of the landowner. For an excellent explanation on tree marking check out the “Promoting a Healthy Forest through Tree Marking” document Tree marking.pdf As described above, tree marking is both an art and a science. In order to be certified to mark trees on crown lands one must be certified by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This involves significant training and audits from the Ministry. Being a very skilled and specialized role a tree marker needs to have years of experience and training in order to successfully make decisions on what trees can be cut or retained and how to identify wildlife and natural values that need protected. |
