Forest Management and Tree Marking |
|
Before any logging operation a “Tree Marking Prescription” should be prepared by a Registered Professional Forester (RPF). Most counties in Ontario are adopting Tree Cutting By-Laws making this process necessary. The prescription outlines the objectives of the operation, how the forest will be marked and cut and points out any values that need to be protected in regards to wildlife and water. It also describes what the forest is to look like in the long term. Having this done ensures that the activities of the logging operation are safe for the environment and will either sustain or improve the quality of the forest.

For an excellent explanation on tree marking check out the “Promoting a Healthy Forest through Tree Marking” document at As described above, tree marking is both an art and a science. In order to be certified to mark trees on crown lands one must be certified by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This involves significant training and audits from the Ministry. Being a very skilled and specialized role a tree marker needs to have years of experience and training in order to successfully make decisions on what trees can be cut or retained and how to identify wildlife and natural values that need protected.
